When Leonidas came to Thermopylae, all the allies consented to retreat. The whole number that stayed with Leonidas to confront two million enemies was three hundred Spartans. A poet wrote inscriptions that were engraved upon the pillars set up in the pass to commemorate this great battle. Pillars and inscriptions have long since passed away.……
